After a seven-year itch, the United faithful finally saw their team clock up four home wins on the trot as they swept aside stubborn Inverness resistance and put a smile on the face of manager Craig Levein.
But it was a disappointing seven for the visitors as despite all their huffing and puffing, this defeat made it seven games without a win.
United had begun the brighter creating numerous chances but they were to pay for their wastefulness in the 15th minute. Collin Samuel's reckless challenge was penalised by a truly excellent curling free-kick from Barry Wilson from 25 yards out which left Derek Stillie stranded.
This made the Tangerines all the more determined. Alan Archibald almost grabbed the equaliser in the 15th minute only to see his flick on Mark Kerr's drive being blocked on the line by Roy McBain.
So it was no surprise that United grabbed a goal in the 22nd when Noel Hunt run on to Craig Conway's cross and hit the net with a glancing header.
While United continued to dominate, the visitors almost grabbed the lead five minutes from the break when a blistering 25-yard free-kick from John Rankin was spilled by Stillie into the path of the Graham Bayne, but fortunately for the keeper he blocked the rebound.
It took some time for the second period to warm up with both teams' play littered with mistakes.
Samuel tried a speculative shot on the hour then four minutes later United grabbed the lead with a scrappy goal. A curling corner from Robson was helped on by David Robertson at the near post with Hunt squeezing in between three defenders to poke the ball in on the line.
It was game over in the 78th minute when Hunt dragged the ball to the byline and cut back for Robertson to sweep the ball home from six yards.
And the visitors' miserable day was completed when sub Dennis Wyness was awarded a soft penalty for a push by Stuart Duff, only for Craig Dargo to blast over.
