As the season petered out at Tannadice so did this game as two teams began in such a positive frame, but allowed it to degenerate into a dull scrap.
By the end, both sets of fans were crying out for the final whistle and probably the end of the season.
It started so well for United. In the third minute, perseverance almost earned Jon Daly a goal. A speculative long ball from Christian Kalvenes was left by the defence, but the big striker ran in and headed over the keeper only to see it slide past the post.
Another defence-splitting ball two minutes later from Morgaro Gomis saw Collin Samuel tear away, but his cutback to Greg Cameron was well saved.
But it really should have been number one in the 13th minute when Kalvenes crossed for Daly to head on to Noel Hunt, but his six-yard header was well blocked by the keeper.
It was virtually one-way traffic with the visitors defending resolutely to keep themselves in the game. However, they were fortunate in the 31st minute when Hunt missed a golden opportunity. Another Kalvenes cross was headed on by Daly and with the goal gaping, the Irish striker blasted wide from six yards out.
It took the visitors 35 minutes to swing in a threatening ball with new United signing Darren Dods almost catching the home defence cold.
However, the pressure was finally rewarded four minutes from the break when Hunt curled in an inviting cross for David Robertson to flick his header over the diving Michael Fraser into the top corner.
The second period continued as the first with United dominating. David McCracken was unlucky on the 55th minute with a superb overhead kick.
But the United were to pay for their wastefulness in the 58th minute when the visitors stole an unlikely equaliser. A John Rankin free-kick, following Cameron's handball, was flicked home from 12 yards by Graham Bayne.
This gave heart to Inverness who upped their game as United fell away. But despite this, disappointingly the game became scrappy and it was no surprise that neither team added to their tally.
