It was as you were after this Tannadice tussle as both teams fought out their fourth draw of the season.
As in previous games, there was little to separate the teams although with their midfield dominance, the visitors could consider themselves a little unfortunate not to take the points.
However, despite Hibernian's possession, Dundee United created the better chances and could have snatched it at the end.
After a cautious opening five minutes, the Tangerines created the first opportunity with a Christian Kalvenes free-kick being headed on by Noel Hunt. His looping header almost caught Andrew McNeil by surprise as he tipped it over.
Five minutes later and United should have been in the lead when Sean Dillon laid it on a plate for Hunt, but unfortunately his team-mate Mark De Vries bumped into him.
Knowing the stakes, the Hibees pushed forward themselves with Martin Canning heading over from a great position in the 13th minute as he met a wonderful curling corner from Merouane Zemmama.
But the Tangerines continued to create the openings with a fortuitous clearance from Ian Murray preventing a De Vries opener. The big striker should have done better on the half-hour with a great turn, but his final shot was weak.
Midfielder Zemmama was the star of the show and he created space, hitting a thunderous shot straight at Lukasz Zaluska in the 33rd minute.
Immediately United flew to the other end with a Hunt cross nodded down by De Vries for David Robinson to collect the miss of the match award as he fired wide.
In the 35th minute a brilliant stop from McNeil prevented Willo Flood's bullet from hitting the net as United upped the ante towards the break.
Despite the home side's chances, ten minutes into the second period and it was 1-0 to Hibs courtesy of some poor defending. On all-out attack, the Tangerines left themselves totally exposed at the back for Dean Shiels to take advantage of the break, run in on goal and easily round Zaluska before slotting home.
However, the lead only lasted two minutes when Thierry Gathuessi needlessly brought down De Vries in the box and Hunt converted the penalty.
It was very much game on with striker Steve Fletcher hooking a great shot into the arms of the keeper. Fifteen minutes from the end, Fletcher again had the chance to grab the lead but was foiled by a superb one-handed save.
And as Hibs piled on the pressure a brilliant Zemmama 20-yard free-kick narrowly missed with Zaluska stranded.
But the final chance fell to United as sub Danny Grainger's free-kick curled over the wall and appeared to be heading into the net before it swerved at the very last moment.
