How ironic that in a week where the English FA have released a video utilising the shouting skills of Ray Winstone to highlight the abuse referees are subjected to, United are, yet again, subjected to a clearly incompetent refereeing decision. Perhaps someone spiked his half-time cuppa with hallucinogenics…that would certainly be the only explanation I can think of why Ian Brines failed to see Klimpl chop down Danny Swanson's delightful run in the box when he, Brines, was standing all of five yards from the whole thing! Insult to injury with the resultant Motherwell goal from the breakaway but surely Scottish football can attract a better standard of referee than some of the buffoons we're lumped with at the moment?
For all of us out with the Old Firm, feeding for the scraps of money offered for SPL finishing positions (i.e. perennially 3rd spot and down…it's the law) idiotic decisions like Saturday's can be extremely costly come the end of the season.
Manager's, players and even fans get called to account for their actions and comments…maybe it's time the referees were made more accountable for their 'mistakes'? We all appreciate it's a hard job but don't take it on if you're not fit for purpose.
