As adverts for the beautiful game go, Saturday's breathless encounter with Hibs certainly had everything you could possibly want from your Saturday match! United's uncharacteristic sloppy defending now seems to be happening often enough for it to become characteristic, sadly. With an opening ten minutes straight from the book of 'things you'd really like not to happen to your team in the opening ten minutes of a game', it looked like we were dead and buried before some people had even settled into their seats properly! Add to that, a stonewall penalty we were denied (Rob Jones's attempt to take out Wesolowski's appendix had insult added to injury with Wesolowski incredulously going in the book for 'simulation'…fer Christ' sake!) and then the penalty we actually were given was saved by an erstwhile Shed hero and it was looking like another lousy day at the office. Not so though, as United emerged to utterly dominate Hibs in wave upon wave of sustained attack and innovative play….I can't honestly remember the last time I saw us totally boss a team like we did in that second-half and we got our just reward in the end when Goodwillie spied a way through the mass of players on the goal-line to send the ET Stand (and the rest of the Arabs) home on a big high. Not good in the slightest for the old ticker but, by God, what a brilliant game to watch.
