ArabTRUST have indicated their support to the recent statement released by the Federation of Dundee United Supporters Clubs in relation to this weekend’s Derby match, and the speculation of a potential boycott by Dundee fans.
Speaking today, ArabTRUST Chairman Neil Glen was supportive of the Federation’s call for Arabs to concentrate on giving their side full backing in Sunday’s game, and also congratulated Dundee boss Jim Duffy for his comments encouraging Dundee fans to turn up at Tannadice.
Mr Glen said “We cannot believe that true football fans would consider intentionally turning their back on a key match for their club, and are fully supportive of the Federation’s recent statement. We would encourage all our members to make all possible efforts to cheer on United in what could be a significant match in terms of final league placings”. He continued “We would also like to commend Jim Duffy for encouraging Dundee fans to turn out and support their team. The derby match creates a truly special atmosphere; one which is appreciated and enjoyed by both sets of players as well as Arabs and Dees alike”.
In addition, ArabTRUST are investigating and evaluating possible methods of minimising any negative impact on Dundee United’s revenue from a lower than anticipated attendance, including forms of supporter contribution.
“Many Arabs have discussed ways in which extra money could be put into the Club to cover any shortfall caused by any such boycott”, Mr Glen said. “ArabTRUST and the Federation have also been approached with a number of ideas, and before deciding upon any course of action, we are evaluating these carefully. If we are to support or be involved in any such scheme, we will make an announcement prior to the weekend”, he added.
