The re-arranged fixture was set to take place at Tannadice on Tuesday night but has been called off on the advice of the police due to adverse weather conditions.
A decision has yet to be taken on a new date for the match, which was originally supposed to take place on November 28.
A statement from the SPL confirmed: "Tuesday night's Clydesdale Bank Premier League match between Dundee United and Rangers at Tannadice has been postponed following advice from the police.
"A new date for the game will be announced in due course."
Heavy snowfall in the area meant the game was thrown into doubt, with Rangers manager Walter Smith anticipating the postponement earlier on Monday.
He said: "That was the reason we had the whole card cancelled a couple of weeks ago, the fact that conditions for supporters travelling in weren't ideal.
"We would want, if it could, for the game to go ahead but taking into account the situation of the travelling support, we will just have to wait and see."
