Neil Lennon, whose Celtic team last week lost at Inverness to concede the title initiative to their Old Firm rivals, said following his side's 2-0 win at Kilmarnock that he was looking for "someone to compete" with Rangers. And prior to the Rugby Park match, Lennon labelled United striker David Goodwillie's comments that he hoped Rangers win the SPL title and Celtic the Scottish Cup as "ill-timed".
Ahead of Tuesday night's match with Rangers, Severin dismissed Lennon's comments, and said: "He's just trying to get a reaction. If you look back all they had to do was win their four games and the title was theirs - they've only got themselves to blame. Obviously he's looking for favours from us, but we're just going to look after ourselves."
United beat Rangers 3-2 on their last trip to Ibrox, with Goodwillie scoring the winner, and Peter Houston's men require six points from their remaining two games to claim third place.
United must beat Rangers, hope Hearts lose to Celtic on Wednesday night and then win Sunday's final day showdown with the capital club at Tannadice.
Severin is first concentrating on Rangers.
He added: "We're going there to win the game. It's going to be difficult, as we saw a few weeks ago at Tannadice when they beat us 4-0.
"We're going to have it hard, but we'll go there, try our best and see what happens.
"If we get the victory, great - and hopefully it goes to the last game for us."
